The envelopes that are displayed here were sent to my brother, Private James Griffiths, by our mother in 1948 when he joined the United States Marine Corps six weeks before he was to graduate from high school. Talk of the Korean Conflict becoming the Korean War was rampant and the love and fears of a mother inspired Marge to draw images on envelopes that she mailed to her son four or five times a week. When he was discharged from the service, he gave the envelopes back to his mother. Later, she offered them to me which delighted me beyond words. By then, I had started rubber stamping and when I showed my mail art collection to a few friends, they told me that I should lock them in a safe and start a rubber stamp company with them so... Stamps Galore was born in 1994!
Many of the 90 envelopes in the collection have been made into rubber stamps. The envelopes shown here are in chronological order starting with May 10, 1948 and ending with an envelope dated March 1949, coinciding with my brother completing his training at Annapolis. Images which are available as rubber stamps are noted under each envelope.
